7 Mistakes You're Making with Your Senior Portraits in Northeast Ohio (and How to Fix Them)

Hey there! Can you believe it’s already senior portrait time in a few weeks? One minute you’re navigating the halls as a nervous freshman, and the next, you’re gearing up for college apps, and that big, beautiful future. It’s a whirlwind, isn’t it? I know exactly how it feels, the excitement of the "lasts" mixed with a tiny bit of "oh my gosh, what do I do next?" swirling in your head.

One thing that shouldn't be adding to your stress? Your senior portraits! This is your moment to shine, to capture who you are right now before you head out to make waves in the world. But I’ve seen so many seniors (and their awesome parents!) hit a few bumps in the road that make the process way more stressful than it needs to be.

Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! As your friendly neighborhood Northeast Ohio wedding photographer and portrait specialist, I’ve seen it all. I want your session at Martello Photography to be the easiest, most fun thing on your calendar. So, let’s dive in and look at the seven most common mistakes people make with their senior portraits in Cleveland and, more importantly, how we’re going to fix them together!

1. Waiting Too Long to Book (The Dreaded Deadline!)

Are you thinking about waiting until the leaves change or until you finally "feel ready"? Stop right there! One of the biggest mistakes is waiting until the last second to get on the calendar.

In Northeast Ohio, our prime portrait seasons, late summer and early fall, fills up fast. But the real kicker? Those pesky yearbook deadlines. Most schools in Cleveland and Ashtabula need your senior photo submitted by October or November. If you wait until then to book, you’re going to be scrambling, and that’s the opposite of a good time.

How to fix it: Reach out as soon as possible! I always recommend booking your session for the summer before your senior year or the very beginning of fall. This gives us plenty of time to capture those gorgeous golden hour vibes and ensures your photos are ready way before the school starts sending those "where is your photo?" emails. Plus, you get it checked off your to-do list early!

2. The "New Me" Trap

I get it, you want to look your absolute best for these photos. You might be tempted to try a brand-new haircut, a bold new hair color, or even a session at the tanning bed the day before.

But let’s be real for a second: have you ever had a "new hair" disaster? We’ve all been there! Drastic changes right before your shoot can lead to a lot of anxiety if it doesn't turn out exactly how you pictured it. You want to look like you in these photos, not a version of you that you don't even recognize in the mirror.

How to fix it: Stick to the "one-week rule." If you need a trim or a color touch-up, do it at least a week before your Ashtabula senior portraits. This gives your hair time to settle and for you to get comfortable with it. And as for tanning? Just say no to the orange glow! Natural skin tones look way better on camera, and I promise you’re already glowing.

3. The Outfit Identity Crisis

Have you ever scrolled through Pinterest and thought, "I should definitely wear that high-fashion, ultra-trendy outfit even though I usually live in hoodies"?

While it’s fun to play dress-up, your senior portraits should scream you. If you’re a classic jeans-and-tee person, don’t feel forced into a formal gown that makes you feel stiff and awkward. When you aren't comfortable in your clothes, it shows in your face. We want you to feel confident and fresh, not like you're wearing a costume.

How to fix it: Focus on comfort and personality over what’s "trending" on TikTok this week. I always suggest bringing a few options: something casual, something a bit more dressed up, and something that represents a hobby or passion (hello, varsity jackets or musical instruments!). Avoid super loud patterns that distract from your face. Think textures, solid colors, and layers: they look amazing and timeless!

4. Ignoring the Iron (The Wrinkle Woes)

You’ve picked out the perfect outfits, they’re sitting in a pile on your bed, and you shove them into a bag five minutes before you head to the studio. We’ve all done it! But those little wrinkles? They love the camera. And while I’m a wizard with a lens, editing out wrinkles on a shirt is one of the hardest and most time-consuming things to do.

How to fix it: Take ten minutes to iron or steam your clothes the night before. Then: and this is the key: hang them up! Bring them to your session on hangers rather than folded in a bag. Your future self will thank you when you see how crisp and polished you look in your final images.

5. The Stiff Statue Syndrome

Do you get that "deer in the headlights" feeling the moment a camera points at you? You're not alone! Many seniors think they have to stand perfectly still and hold a pose until their face hurts. But "The Stiff Statue" rarely leads to those authentic, emotional shots that Martello Photography is known for.

How to fix it: Let’s move! My personalized approach is all about keeping things fun and active. I’ll have you walking, spinning, laughing, and maybe even doing a little dance. Movement helps you relax and lets your true personality shine through. Don’t worry about posing: I’ll guide you through everything. We’re going to hang out, listen to some music, and just have a great time.

6. Location Mismatch

Cleveland and Ashtabula have some of the most incredible backdrops. From the industrial vibes of downtown Cleveland to the serene beaches of Lake Erie, we are spoiled for choice! But a common mistake is choosing an outfit that completely clashes with your location. You don't want to wear a neon green shirt in front of a bright red brick wall: you’ll look like a holiday decoration!

How to fix it: Think about the "vibe" of your location. If we’re heading to a park with lots of green, earthy tones like creams, rusts, or blues look stunning. If we’re doing a city session in Cleveland, you can go a bit bolder or more modern with your style. When you book with me, we’ll chat about your locations and your outfits to make sure everything looks cohesive and intentional.

7. Stressing the Small Stuff

Woke up with a blemish? Have a small bruise from soccer practice? It’s okay! I’ve seen seniors get so stressed about a tiny imperfection that it ruins their whole mood for the shoot. They try to hide their face or stay in one specific angle, which limits the variety of shots we can get.

How to fix it: Take a deep breath and let it go. I promise you, I’ve got your back! At my Ashtabula studio and on location, I use flattering lighting and angles to make you look your best. Plus, professional retouching is part of the package! I can easily handle minor blemishes or stray hairs in post-production. Your job is just to show up and be your awesome self.
